Who we are

The Founder and Director's Message

My name is Mr. Joseph Elias. My profession is a social worker.

I established FONELISCO in order to provide a safe haven for the most vulnerable members of the Tanzanian society. I started the organization after talking with the street children and orphans about their needs and financed the establishment through selling self-made postcards and necklaces.

When I was a child I saw a family of children who were orphaned at a young age. They were constantly hungry and without clothes or education. I would give them my food and occasionally went hungry myself. Taking them food and seeing the joy it brought to them made me realize I could help other people too.

Through this experience I learnt that without food and other basic needs no one can function aptly. I started FONELISCO because I have always had an urge to help those less fortunate than myself. I feel like I play my part in society and for the children of my local region. I am interested in helping children in difficult circumstances by providing destitute children with accommodation, food, health care and education opportunities.

I conduct various activities such as:

  • Supervise the care of children at the orphanage.
  • Maintaining orphanage staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting and training employees.
  • Transform children`s lives by recruiting, orienting, supporting, coaching, and sending them to school.
  • Counsel guardians/ relatives of orphans and inform them to expectations.
  • Very Patient, tolerant to be able to handle both the children and the workers.

FONELISC (Foundation Of New Life for Street Children and Orphans) was founded in 1997 to provide orphans and street children with the opportunity toobtain an education, medical attention, daily meals, shelter and aloving environment, which they would otherwise be unable to receive. Webelieve in instilling the ideas of self-sustainability and theimportance of hard work in our children; therefore, they cultivate mostof the food we eat. Our goal is to raise our children as responsible andproductive members of the community who will be able to provide fortheir own needs and are willing to help those less fortunate than them
Our vision and dream of building our own orphanage to live on the new land is beginning to become reality.

Nobody chooses to live on the streets or have no food and clothes. It’s extremely challenging, especially for children who never decided for themselves to live a life like that and who are still dependent on other people.

Joseph Mabinga Elias realized these issues and started to do something….

FONELISCO (Foundation of New Life for Street Children and Orphans) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization striving to help the street children and orphans of Mwanza, Tanzania.

FONELISCO is not affiliated with any religious or political movement and works to help children regardless of their belief or social background. Its Certificate of Registration is SO. No' 11811 - Dar es Salaam.
Giving street children and orphans a second chance
Child protection policy for the FONELISCO Children’s Home Tanzania.
The FONELISCO Children’s Home exists to care for the most vulnerable members of Tanzanian society especially orphaned and street children and as such endeavors to provide a safe environment for the children in its care. The following guidelines are therefore necessary in order to protect the children from being at risk of abuse.
  • All children should be treated equally according to their needs and provided with a basic level of care to include clothing, food, accommodation and where possible and appropriate education.
  • All children’s workers in Tanzania should be aware of the discipline policy at FONELISCO which does not include beating as a punishment.
  • Workers should not encourage or permit children of any age into their own personal living space on site/offsite at any time unless as an organized outing..
  • Children’s personal space and privacy must be respected, individual children should not be left alone with a career out of view of other members of the family.
  • Where children are seeking specific advice counseling should be undertaken according to gender. E.g. Lady speaking with a girl. This should take place within view of the rest of the family eg.Under the shelter.
  • Where a career has a serious issue to discuss with a child at least two adults should be present and notes made of the content of the meeting.
  • If an allegation is made against another child or adult then the procedure for reporting allegations should be followed.
  • Visiting people to site should not be allowed in the children’s dormitories unless accompanied by a Fonelisco Team member and should abide by the guidelines outlined above as well as the other policies in force on site.
  • Video and photographs should not be taken of the children without prior permission.

Procedure for dealing with allegations.
  • If an allegation is made against another child or adult this information should be passed to the named FONELISCO child protection officer.
  • The FONELISCO child protection officer will speak independently with both the child and adult involved (ensuring leading questions are not asked) and will inform the Director of the situation.
  • A course of action will then be agreed. If necessary the matter will be referred to the center Manager.
  • If either of the child protection officers are involved in the allegation then the matter should be referred to the Director.
Who cares for the children?
We have a dedicated team of caregivers who look after our children. Most of our staff have a certificate, diploma and degree in childcare. On top we have 4 social workers as well as two cooks who look after the well-being of our kids.

What does daily life at the Children’s Home look like?
Every morning the children wake up between 5 and 6 am, prepare for school, eat breakfast, and then head to school. Our children attend different schools around the area depending on their needs and academic achievements. Our children return from school between 4:00 and 6:00 pm. They then spend some time with our volunteers who provide individual assistance with the homework and fun activities afterwards. The children then take a shower and get ready for dinner. After dinner, the children finish their homework in Study Hall with the assistance of the caregivers. The children attend school Monday-Saturday. On Sundays they do chores, relax at home, play football or go to the church.

Health and safety (this is for volunteers)
What vaccinations do I need? And what about malaria prophylaxis?
Tanzania: An important thing to know about volunteering in Tanzania is that we can’t tell you whether you should or shouldn’t take malaria tablets – we strongly advise you to make an appointment with a travel doctor and discuss your trip with them, then make a decision based on their advice. Your doctor can also recommend different vaccinations you may need.
Whether you take tablets or not, you should bring a good insect repellent and make sure to use the mosquito net on your bed (all of our beds are protected by nets).

It’s also worth remembering that malaria can be easily treated – if you fall ill during your stay we will accompany you to a nearby Hospital as soon as possible for a diagnosis.

Packing
What kind of clothes do I need to wear?
Tanzania: While at our Orphanage or visiting Mwanza it is important to dress a bit more conservatively and wear clothes that cover your knees and shoulders. You can wear bikinis at all resorts and hotel & private beaches but you will need to wear a t-shirt and half long leggings or bathing trunks that cover your knees when you go to public beaches (for example with our kids on Sundays).

What is the weather in Tanzania like?
Tanzania: Tanzania has a tropical climate with a hot, humid and rainy season. The heaviest rains are from mid-March to May. From late October – December there are lighter rains. Even though there are rainy seasons, it can still rain at any time! It’s always a good idea to pack a rain jacket just in case.

Our volunteers play an important role in our projects, providing much-needed support, assistance, and individual attention that is crucial for children’s growth and development. As a volunteer for Fonelisco you will be participating in a meaningful way in projects that are valued by the communities with whom we work. Your work makes a difference!

Experience with children is an asset but not obligatory. Tell us your strengths, skills and interests. We have many projects and need different profiles, talents and competences. You should be at least 18 years old and willing to stay at least one month or so. We are looking for motivated, flexible, adaptable, open-minded, communicative and pro-active volunteers who wish to immerse themselves into the African culture and traditions. While volunteering at Fonelisco, we ask that you try to keep an open mind to the new culture around you, as it is likely to be very different than your home country.

We want all of our volunteers to feel welcome and at home while living with us and we are happy to answer questions and offer advice on any issues. Tanzania is a wonderful country, known for its friendly and hospitable people, and although as a country has its difficulties, on the whole, this is a wonderful place to live. We hope your volunteer experience with Fonelisco will be a rewarding, enjoyable and full of memorable moments.

Our hope and joy in the orphanage depend on your donation. We love and appreciate your humble effort in wanting to change the lives of the people and vulnerable children here. Your presence means a lot to their lives and they appreciate the fact that there are people out there who really care for them and understand the kind of hard life others go through. Help us and give the children a brighter future.
